The attack took place in Mudiyah district on Friday. The attacker was in a car. It exploded as soon as it arrived in front of the outpost, said Mohamed Al Naqib, spokesman for Yemen's southern separatist command Southern Transitional Council (STC).
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the US-based 'SITE' intelligence group. Al-Qaeda's Yemen and Saudi Arabia branches formed AQAP in 2009 and took advantage of the chaos of the civil war in the country (Yemen).
In recent years, AQAP has carried out sporadic attacks targeting STC-affiliated groups in southern Yemen. STC is supported by UAE.
AQAP also bombed an army checkpoint last March. Two soldiers were killed in that attack.
