In Iran, 29 people were hanged in a single day last Wednesday. According to human rights activists in the country, 26 of these executions took place in one prison

The incident follows the hanging of a man last Tuesday for his involvement in the 2022 protests. According to Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR), 26 people were executed in Gezelhesar Prison in Kharaj, near Tehran, while 4 were hanged in the Karaj City Prison. Among those executed were two Afghan nationals, convicted of crimes including murder, drug offenses, and rape.

Two US-based organizations, the Human Rights Activist News Agency and the Center for Human Rights in Iran, reported that at least 24 of the hangings occurred in the prison. This event comes on the heels of the September 2022 arrest of a young woman named Masa Amini by the country’s morality police for violating the hijab policy. Amini died in police custody, with her family alleging she was tortured and killed.
