Schools and colleges are opening today. When is the next six-monthly assessment scheduled?

After a one-month deadlock, class activities in educational institutions will resume starting this Sunday. The Ministry of Education has mandated the reopening of schools, colleges, and madrasas, with primary schools instructed to resume full operations. The postponed HSC and equivalent examinations are now scheduled to begin on September 11, according to the updated timetable.
In secondary schools, the traditional six-monthly evaluations have been halted following a four-day assessment process. The start date for the biannual evaluation remains uncertain.

Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 and her subsequent departure to India, the initial decision to reopen educational institutions on August 7 was met with low attendance due to widespread fear. However, a new directive from the Ministry of Education, issued last Thursday, confirms that educational institutions will officially reopen on Sunday, as ordered by the interim government's chief adviser. Additionally, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has instructed primary schools to resume normal activities.

Regarding the HSC exams, which were postponed multiple times due to student protests, the revised timetable published yesterday indicates that there are 13 remaining exam days out of a total of 21.

**Semester Exams Delayed**

Under the new curriculum, the six-monthly evaluations for secondary schools began nationwide on July 3. According to the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), approximately one crore students were expected to participate in these assessments, which were planned to cover 10 subjects over 10 days. However, the process was halted after just four days.
An assistant headmaster from a private secondary school in Dhaka, speaking anonymously, mentioned to Prothom Alo that the evaluation began in line with the new curriculum. However, there is now uncertainty about whether these evaluations will continue under the previous government's curriculum.

**Curriculum Update**

Last year, the new curriculum was introduced in the first, sixth, and seventh grades. This year, it has been extended to the second, third, eighth, and ninth grades, with plans to implement it in Class XII by 2027. Students in Class IX will take the SSC exam under this new curriculum for the first time, potentially in January 2026. The new curriculum has introduced significant changes in both learning and assessment, but its future remains uncertain following the recent change in government.

When asked about the overall situation, former caretaker government advisor Rasheda K Chowdhury told Prothom Alo that steps need to be taken to restore normalcy in educational institutions. She emphasized the importance of balancing party management committees with necessary reforms. It’s crucial to ensure that exam burdens, such as those from the Primary Education Completion and JSC exams, do not become excessive again. While curriculum updates are important, the focus should remain on minimizing exam stress.

Rasheda K Chowdhury also suggested that the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities might be a procedural issue, but an interim solution is needed to keep universities functioning smoothly.

Educational institutions have been closed indefinitely since July 17 due to safety concerns amid protests demanding job quota reforms. Following the government’s fall on August 5, there were calls for resignations within universities.
