Bangladeshi students have expressed solidarity with the ongoing protests in India against the rape-murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, India. They showed solidarity with three different banners on the campus of Dhaka University from 4 pm to 10 pm on Friday.
They carried out these solidarity programs through protest marches, candle lighting and human chains with various placards with protest slogans. In addition to expressing solidarity with India's movement, it highlighted the insecurity of women in the country. Various demands were made including raising the awareness necessary to ensure the safety of women at home and outside.
Interim Government Social Welfare Adviser Sharmin S. Murshid also joined the solidarity rally held at the foot of anti-terrorist Raju sculpture in Dhaka University campus around 10 pm under the banner of 'Occupy Girls Night'. At the beginning of the rally, a minute's silence was observed with lighted candles in memory of women who have been raped at various times in the country.
Social welfare adviser Sharmin S. Murshid said in the speech, 'We want to ensure a safe environment for women everywhere. I am on your side.'
Former teacher of Jahangirnagar University Rehnuma Ahmed spoke in solidarity. Expressing solidarity with the ongoing movement in India, he said, 'Our demand is that all the rape cases that have happened in the country should be prosecuted. This time it has to happen, no more hesitation.'
Dhaka University student Nuzia Hasin Rasha, one of the organizers of the rally, raised the question, 'Why is the anti-sexual harassment cell not implemented in our workplaces and educational institutions? Why do students have to enter the hall before 10 o'clock on the pretext of security? It is our request to the new advisor that these issues be looked into carefully.'
In between the speeches in the assembly, music performance was performed. Teachers and students of various institutions including Dhaka University addressed the gathering one by one.
Position papers were read out in the program before the speeches. It has 13 points of demand. Among the demands are fair investigation and trial of every rape and murder including Tanu, Munia, women and child abuse cases to be settled within 180 days and ensuring 33 percent participation of women at all levels of the state in accordance with international agreements.
In solidarity with the ongoing protests against the rape and murder of doctors in India, the first rally was held at Dhaka University campus yesterday around 4 pm under the banner 'Justice for RG Kar, Justice for Moumita'. It is also held at the foot of the Raju sculpture. A protest march was taken out after the rally. In addition to Dhaka University, women from Jahangirnagar University, BRAC University and other universities participated.
Rajshahi University, Chittagong city and Mymensingh city also held a solidarity rally yesterday to protest against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
