White Sox Take on Yankees in Pursuit of Rare Series Victory

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone described Monday's 12-2 road loss to the struggling Chicago White Sox, who have 91 losses, as just as shocking as any other defeat for a team vying for a division title.

"Every loss feels like a missed opportunity," Boone remarked. "We have a lot at stake each day, so it’s disappointing to lose. Winning is exhilarating, but regardless, we have to move on and focus on the next game."

The Yankees will aim to rebound as their three-game series against the White Sox continues Tuesday night. New York, having lost four of their last six games, is now half a game behind the idle Baltimore Orioles for first place in the American League East and for the best record in baseball.

The Yankees' recent struggles in clutch situations have been costly. On Monday, they stranded 16 runners and were just 2-for-18 with men in scoring position, while the White Sox out-hit them 18-9, setting a season high and taking their largest lead in a game this year.

Grady Sizemore, who secured his first win as interim manager following Pedro Grifol's dismissal, praised the team’s effort: “I’m glad they’ve been showing up and playing hard. It was a great team effort.”

Andrew Vaughn and Gavin Sheets each had four hits, with Dominic Fletcher adding three. Sheets also drove in three runs with RBI doubles. The White Sox saw homers from Korey Lee and Brooks Baldwin, and Andrew Benintendi recorded two hits, marking his fourth multi-hit game of August.

Benintendi reflected on his performance: “There have been times this year when I’ve swung well but the results haven’t shown. Other times, I’ve swung at bad pitches and gotten myself out. It’s a long season with many ups and downs.”

Injury news for the Yankees: Jazz Chisholm Jr. left the game after injuring his left leg while sliding home on Anthony Volpe’s RBI infield single in the fifth inning. Chisholm is scheduled for imaging and further testing on Tuesday.

Rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon (2-5, 3.91 ERA) will seek to lead the White Sox to their first series victory since June 28-30. After a rough patch in July, Cannon has allowed just two runs over his last 13 innings, including a recent 5-1 win at Oakland on August 6, where he gave up one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Cannon has not faced the Yankees in his career.

For the Yankees, Nestor Cortes (5-10, 4.42 ERA) is slated to start. He previously faced the White Sox on May 17, earning a win by allowing just one run and five hits over seven innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. Cortes has a 5-0 record with a 2.03 ERA in five appearances against the White Sox, including four starts.

Cortes has faced recent difficulties, posting a 6.93 ERA in July. On Thursday, he suffered a 9-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, surrendering six runs and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.
