Ukraine and Russia have counterclaims for the occupation and recovery of the Kursk region

Ukraine has claimed new progress in the ongoing campaign against Russia. Yesterday, Thursday, Ukraine claimed that they occupied an area of more than 1,100 square kilometers. It was the largest attack by a foreign army on Russian territory since World War II.

Meanwhile, Russia has also demanded the liberation of a village in the Kursk border region from the hands of Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine, which has been fighting Russia's offensive for more than two years, launched a counter-offensive on August 6.

Ukraine says it has already captured several settlements and the city of Sudzha. The location of the city is eight kilometers from the border.

"We have taken control of 1,150 square kilometers of territory and 82 settlements," said top army commander Oleksandr Sirsky.

Russia says it is sending additional troops to the Belgorod region after claiming to free a village in the Kursk border region from Ukrainian forces.

AFP correspondents saw the Russian Red Cross distributing food and clothes to people evacuated from border areas in Kursk. As many as 500 people lined up to collect food and clothes.

Russia says more than 120,000 people have left the area or been evacuated.

Nina Golinyaeva, who fled Sudzha to safety, told AFP: 'I was very scared, very scared. Shells were being fired from all sides. Helicopters, airplanes, warplanes were flying over the house.

He also said, 'I saw soldiers on the streets during the evening. They were saying, "You must leave urgently, or they will kill you."'

After the start of the Russian campaign in Ukraine in February 2022, although there were small attacks in Kursk and Belgorod, this is the first such large-scale operation.

Ukrainian officials claim that they are conducting this operation in self-defense.

Meanwhile, in an interview given to the Russian Izvestia newspaper, Nikolai Patrushev, an aide to the Russian president, said that NATO and the Western world are involved in the plan to carry out the operation of Ukraine in Kursk.
